Up North & Outback
2025

Australia has been long considered the antipode to the northern hemisphere. Dubbed the ‘Land Down Under’, it finds the ultimate contrast with Canada; the ‘Great White North’. Directionally defined with a fuzzy frontier, references to the ‘Up North’ and ‘Outback’ point to the wild expanse found at the centre of each nation’s cultural identity, despite its remoteness from major population centres. A shared reverence for a distant land fosters a mutual exchange of working-holiday travellers drawn toward the familiarity amidst a foreign landscape. This project traces the parallel journeys of travellers from the city to the rugged heartlands of Canada and Australia. A proposed orientation to nature is mediated by a short-term accommodation strategy designed for three conditions; an urban lot, a cultivated clearing and a forged wilderness.

Canada

Marking the peripheries of yards and lots, the urban interface to nature serves to remind what has been forgot. Contained and allotted, a border in place, nature must grow and stay within its designated space.
A clearing in a forest, an outcrop on a farm, the rural site is defined by nature’s natural charm. Between nestled and vast, the perspective is differed; the Australian breezy openness is mirrored by the Canadian cozy winter.
Arrival to the wild, the resting place of identity of each nation - a cultural landscape loaded with great expectation. The land shall grow, wherever it may please, the traveller however will rest where they are to be met with ease.

Australia

Immersed in a context of its own cultivation, the skier’s slope mirrors the farmland’s mosaic orientation. As landscapes of extraction, with money to be gained, the traveller equates the land to its upkeep to be maintained.
The sites are selected for what there is to do, proximity to forests and national parks too. When ecological destruction occurs, what might the travellers get up to? Tend to the land and take in the rugged view.
