Nestled along the rock, the ecology centre connects Sudbury’s industrial mining history to its decades long reforestation efforts, bridging an awareness to the transformation of thousands of hectares of barren wasteland into thriving, renewed ecosystems. Overlooking Lake Laurentian, the centre promotes conservation through an immersive nature education embedded within organized learning spaces.

The building’s primary meandering rammed earth wall uses local soils - siting the building uniquely to its location, while also reflecting a heaviness similarly found in the rockscape of Sudbury. The layered effect of the rammed earth is composed to to reflect the strata layers in regional rocks. Circulation within the building mirrors a pit mine; as ramps spiral visitors in a downward descent through the centre, encountering varying moments of light and darkness along their journey to the ground.
